What is the Marché Solidaire Frontenac?
To improve access to fresh, healthy and affordable food, the Carrefour solidaire CFC operates its a seasonal market on the square of Frontenac metro station. Created in 2007 as a result of a citizen’s initiative, the Marché solidaire Frontenac is a space that encourages citizen participation in food-related issues. The Marché solidaire Frontenac differs from traditional businesses through its participatory model, its objectives of supporting local food systems, and its social values. The Marché is a social economy program – all profits are reinvested in the Carrefour’s programs and services.
The Marché’s History and Values
The Marché works hard to improve access to healthy, local, high quality food to people experiencing food insecurity, while contributing to a supportive, sustainable and equitable food system. The Marché is:
- Participatory: Actively involves citizens in the food system;
- Affordable: Offers products at reasonable and accessible prices;
- Local: Promotes local and ultra-local products, including products grown in own neighborhood;
- Supportive: Considers folks in precarious socio-economic situations, creates links between urban and rural landscapes;
- Proud: Provides an alternative grocery shopping experience in the Centre-Sud neighborhood for going on 10 years.
How Do the Participatory Model and the Discounts Work?
The Marché solidaire Frontenac is powered by the volunteerism of its members! By volunteering for a 4-hour shift, you will have access to a discount at the market throughout the month.
To register as a volunteer, you must first be a member of the Carrefour solidaire. It’s free and can be done quickly via an Internet form:
Once you’re a member, you can sign up directly on the volunteer schedule and just show up at your date and time to complete your shift:
Volunteer tasks at the market include stocking shelves, serving customers, unpacking orders, stocking inventory, recruiting new members, and much more! You can choose to work a morning or afternoon shift. Once you have completed your volunteer work, your discount will be applied at the cash register automatically.

It’s easy! You can use your Carte proximité as a method of payment at checkout, just like a regular debit card. Our cashiers can also easily check the amount remaining on your card. Don’t hesitate to ask! The card is valid for the purchase of all foods available on the market stalls.
