FOOD COUPONS | Today, the 2025 season of Carte Proximité is launched! Once again this year, more than 1,600 households experiencing food insecurity will receive monthly allocations on their Cards throughout the summer and fall, allowing them to become paying customers and engaged citizens at more than a hundred public markets, farmers’ kiosks, and social economy grocery stores in Montreal, Laval, Outaouais, and newly in Estrie! This network of solidarity merchants has, in turn, committed to sourcing local food, creating a double and triple investment in the social and solidarity economy and ultimately, in our local Quebec food systems.
In addition to improving the food insecurity situation of participating households and increasing their access to healthy food, Carte Proximité allows for a series of positive impacts on their health and well-being: from reduced stress to better ability to manage their chronic illness.

Proudly operated by the community sector to prioritize above all the needs of food insecure households in program design, and born from a collaboration between a charitable non-profit and a public market, Carte Proximité has inspired a broader conversation about food vouchers in Quebec over the past 5 years. In continuous operation since 2020, Carte Proximité is the first food coupon program in Canada to implement on a plastic card, allowing for a dignified experience, significant scaling, and real-time data analysis.
To demonstrate the need for ministerial funding that would allow its sustainability and in collaboration with many partners, Carte Proximité openly shares its learnings and tools to support organizations and groups interested in experimenting with food subsidies in their territory! We are privileged to witness the growing enthusiasm for these great initiatives and proud to lead the charge to create the most innovative and ambitious program possible, and above all, one that has a significant and measurable impact on food insecurity and local food systems in our communities.
